On September 10
Appleseed release Sowing the Seeds - The 10th Anniversary, a 2-CD set that includes
newly recorded tracks by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Seeger (their first recorded
collaboration - and on a Springsteen song, at that!), Ani DiFranco and Donovan,
as well as highlights of their 80-plus releases to date.
The aptly-titled Sowing the Seeds contains 37 tracks, of which nine are exclusive
new recordings. Each of the sets discs has a separate theme. Disc 1, And
Justice for All, collects many politically relevant compositions encompassing
the ongoing war in Iraq, human rights issues and the environment. Most of the
new songs are on this disc -Springsteen and Seegers moving rendition of
Bruces Ghost of Tom Joad(Pete sings Bruce - an ironic turnabout
after Springsteens recent Seeger-centric CDs and tours); a blistering
take on Seegers anti-war classic, Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,
by Ani DiFranco; Donovans re-recording of his 1965 hit, Universal
Soldier; three additional Pete Seeger recordings addressing the dangers
of too much Executive Branch power - The Emperor is Naked Today-o
and The Ross Perot (George Bush) Guide to Answering Embarrassing Questions
- and the death penalty (Walking Down Death Row); and an upbeat
celebration of progress in race relations, If You Miss Me at the Back
of the Bus by longtime Appleseed artists Kim and Reggie Harris with guests
Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary) and the duo of Bethany & Rufus.
Among the tracks here from previous Appleseed releases by our Whos Who
roster of politically committed artists: the controversial Bring Them
Home (a song Springsteen has subsequently performed and recorded) by Pete
Seeger with Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco and Steve Earle; Jackson Browne &
Joan Baezs yearning duet on Guantanamera; Eric Andersen and
rap/reggae star Wyclef Jean joining forces on Phil Ochs White Boots
Marching in a Yellow Land; actor/singer Tim Robbins harrowing reading
of All My Children of the Sun; and the 9/11-inspired The Bravest
by Tom Paxton and 19 Miles to Baghdad by Lizzie West & The White
Buffalo (the latter song a favorite on the Pacifica Networks syndicated
Democracy Now radio and television show.
Disc 2 of Sowing the Seeds, subtitled Peace, Love and Appleseed,
showcases a somewhat lighter song selection and the wide range of
artists and styles represented on the label. Theres folk-rock from both
sides of the Atlantic, including Al Stewarts Gina on the Kings Road,
Donovans mystical Yin My Yang, The Kennedys effervescent
Namaste and John Stewarts coulda-been-a-hit Baby, Its
You. Theres traditional acoustic folk from ex-Byrds leader and Rock
& Roll Hall of Fame member Roger McGuinn, with guest Pete Seeger, on Dinks
Song, the title track from David Brombergs massively popular new
CD of solo folk-blues, Try Me One More Time, and Tim Eriksens
spooky but uplifting Leave Your Light On. Other artists include
Eric Andersen with guest Lou Reed on the chugging acoustic rocker You
Cant Relive the Past, Judy Collins, Pat Humphries (her classic Swimming
to the Other Side), Dick Gaughan, Tommy Sands and Vedran Smailovic, and
more. The disc is bookended by new Pete Seeger recordings - his tranquil instrumental
Quite Early Morning opens the proceedings, and his observations
on the need for activism (Pete gets the last word) are a fitting
conclusion.
